Certification journey: from woodland origins to product innovation

Re-Genus’s relationship with Grown in Britain (GiB) began not with a product, but with woodland. Founder Daniel Iddon had already registered trees grown in his own Llwyndrain woodland under the Grown in Britain certification scheme in February 2025. Sustainable woodland management has always been central to the company’s ethos, making certification a natural extension of its values.

As the business evolved from trials into commercial deployment, Re-Genus approached GiB to explore certification for its growing system, enriched with wood-based inputs sourced from the British forestry supply chain.

At the time, no certification pathway existed for a product of this kind. Re-Genus’s system transforms forestry by-products into biological growing nutrition, sitting between traditional timber products and agricultural inputs. This required review and development of a new certification approach at product level.

Following a collaborative process spanning almost two years, formal product approval was confirmed in January 2026.

Building traceability into an innovative product

Achieving certification required the development of a robust chain of custody framework tailored to a non-standard product category.

Unlike conventional wood products, the Re-Genus system combines forestry-derived inputs with other certified materials before being processed into a biological growing medium. To meet the standard, the company implemented 16 new standard operating procedures, covering areas such as:

• Supplier due diligence and approval procedure.
• Sourcing and input control.
• Processing and production control procedure.
• Claims and labelling.
• Risk assessment and internal audit.

An initial audit assessed readiness, after which procedures were refined and embedded into day-to-day operations.

Collaboration across the supply chain

Partnership working played a critical role. For example, collaboration with biomass supplier Land Energy – itself GiB-certified – helped shape how certification could be applied proportionately without duplicating existing compliance requirements.

Working closely with auditors and supply chain partners, Re-Genus helped set a precedent for incorporating innovative, circular products into future iterations of the standard.

The process proved highly collaborative, with GiB auditors providing practical guidance throughout.

Supporting circular growing systems

One of the most powerful outcomes of certification is the circularity it enables.

Many forestry customers supplying wood grown in the UK generate by-products through harvesting and processing. Through the Re-Genus system, these materials can be repurposed into biological nutrition that supports the establishment of the next generation of trees.

This creates a full-loop model: UK woodland → forestry by-product → growing system → new woodland establishment. Certification validates the loop – from origin through to end use.

While certification is still recent, it provides a strong platform for future growth.
