After a thorough biannual review and collaboration with industry stakeholders from across the supply chain, we’ve updated our standard to ensure it stays relevant and effective for certificate holders and the wider sector.

The Grown in Britain Standard was last reviewed in July 2022. Ensuring the Standard delivers for its certificate holders, as well as for potential certificate holders is crucial, and therefore a Working Group was established earlier this year to review the Standard for implementation from October 2024.

The Working Group comprised experts from across the industry who reviewed the Standard line by line. In addition, the Grown in Britain team input their experiences over the last two years in terms of areas of the Standard that could be strengthened, and new areas that the Standard could cover. Following several meetings of the Working Group, the draft standard was shared more widely with industry groups to ensure that the changes proposed worked for the industry.

Here’s what’s new:

♻️ Inclusion of Recycled Content: The new Grown in Britain + Recycled Content claim (GiB+RC) allows for certified products that include both virgin timber and recycled materials.

🌳 Tree-Derived Products: For the first time, non-timber products derived from trees – like sap and fruit – are now included in the Standard.

🌲 Trees Outside Woodlands: The Standard now covers trees in defined areas such as parklands or council-owned land, expanding certification beyond traditional forests and woodlands.

❎ Clarified Non-Conformance Rules: Clearer guidance on non-conformances, suspensions, and withdrawals to ensure compliance and maintain high standards.

The updated standard took effect on 1st October 2024 for new certificate holders, with all certificate holders expected to comply by 30th September 2025.
