Led by London based architectural practice Studio Bark, the #BarkLiveBuild 2015 project involved the construction of Warren Lodge; a super-insulated timber frame building for David Levitt OBE, using only UK sourced materials and built by a student team – most of whom had never picked up a tool before in their lives.
#BarkLiveBuild bridges the gap between education and the on-site application of architecture, where students can graduate from university with very little understanding of construction terminology, materials, or technical detailing. The project provided students the chance to acquire these skills through the construction of Warren Lodge, enhancing their technical understanding to take forward into their architectural careers.
Low impact, low energy environmental architecture lies at the heart of Studio Bark’s ethos; specifying British grown and sourced timber was paramount. BSW Timber supplied the entirety of the structural timber; the wood was quality machined, kiln dried C16 graded whitewood construction timber, specially selected to produce a neater finish, as well as being Grown in Britain and FSC Certified.
TRADA played a special role in the project; helping with technical consultancy and guidance upon best practice methods of building a timber frame. Studio Bark launched the film as part of Grown in Britain Week; a national celebration of our woods and the societal values and products that they contribute.
