The Darby Table, made from oak or elm, is an example of how local sourcing benefits the UK economy. The life of an elm Darby begins in Scotland, where the elm trees are felled. The log then travel to Tyler Hardwoods in Wiltshire, where it is sawn, seasoned and kiln dried before it continues on its journey to the Benchmark workshops; just seven miles away in Kintbury, West Berkshire. When Benchmark’s craftsmen have finished their work, the table is moved from their workshops, to just across the yard into their showroom where it is sold direct to customers. Every step of this process is covered by the Grown in Britain chain of custody standard, which ensures not only that the timber has originated from the UK, but also ensures the timber is legally and sustainably sourced.
Sourcing from UK woodlands gives owners the confidence to provide the investment needed to bring under-used and under-managed woodland and forests back into use, turning them into a real, financially sustainable assets that also provide local employment as well as important ecosystem and recreational amenity. Using local sawmills gives the owners the confidence to invest in new machinery, and invest in the local workforce; for example Tyler Hardwood employ 14 people. Benchmark themselves have developed a highly skilled local workforce of 70 people, through an award winning apprenticeship programme currently training five apprentices, and promote the value of these apprenticeships to other businesses.
Benchmark are also active promoters of sustainable manufacture and products. They continually strive to raise awareness and educate through involvement in high profile publicity, generating projects and CPD programmes. They are delighted to support Grown in Britain and help create a sustainable future for our woodlands and forests.
